The other week, we wrote about Meati’s incredible track ‘Carmen’. It was like something we’d never heard before, absolutely amazing. A few days after, the Toronto based producer offered to do a guestmix for our series, and we were just a little bit more than happy for him to get involved. We also managed to grab time to interview Meati (Todd Douglas) in which he talks to us about future collaborations with the likes of Deebs, Pelican Fly and Get Flavor as well as the water in Toronto, blogs and pears. Meati described this mixtape as what you’d expect to hear from one of his set, spanning techno to hip-hop to UK to everything in between. This is seriously amazing. Toronto flavours. Check the full interview below, where you can also download and stream the mixtape.

AO-AO INTERVIEW WITH MEATI:
AO-AO: Bigup for doing this! For those who arn’t familiar with your work, how would you describe what you do and make?
AO-AO: I don’t know what they put in the water in Toronto but right now it seems to be a breeding ground for so much musical talent. Any idea why? What makes Toronto special for you?
The water IS delicious, but I think its just the competitive nature of the game. One person makes a big track, then it just inspires the rest to push harder or be different. It’s special to me, because some of my closest friends are the ones that push me the hardest.
AO-AO: Your track ‘Carmen’ really blew me away when I heard it, it features quaint little samples from Lil Wayne and Drake. What makes you think “Yeah I wanna use that as a sample”?
Thanks man! Means a lot. I honestly don’t really know how I end up with the samples I choose. They just have this way of getting into the arrangement and then they tell the story.
AO-AO: Your due to release an EP very soon on Get Flavor Records with some big names on the remixes, how did the Get Flavor collaboration come about?
Get Flavor got introduced to me through my friend and collab co producer deebs. He had an EP drop on GF that I loved and ever since then, I have followed the label. Antoine and Pierre dig so hard, and they do it all for the music. Really lucky to be working with them. The remixes for the EP are amazing, John Roman, Bosstone, Krueger, and Ardalan all killed it.
AO-AO: Musically, what’s inspired you this year?
F1 Cars, Sirens, Breathing, Subs, Get Flavor, Pelican Fly, Fade to Mind, Nightshifters, More Music etc.
AO-AO: What does a typical day look like for you right now?
Usually a pear if I can scrounge one up, then bike, work, buzzfeed, then Ableton live suite, then slushies with Deebs, Wenzell and my girlfriend Huie.
AO-AO: How important do you think music blogs are to an artist in today’s environment, and to the development of an artist?
We inhabit a world of never ending possibilities, with more access to creativity than ever. My trusted blogs are the filter and funnel for what I need to be a part of and experience. You don’t even need a label to be successful anymore with the right support.
AO-AO: Top 5 tracks at the moment?
Dauwd – Ikopol
Lando Kal – Maneuver
Deebs – From the Start
Roska – Boxed In (Bok Bok remix)
The set up – Obie Trice
AO-AO: Top 5 producers at the moment?
Gingy and Bordello
AO-AO: Aside from the EP on Get Flavor Records, what’s coming up for you in the future, production and DJ wise?
Tsuka collab, remixes for Nah Like, and a remix for Deebs upcoming EP on Pelican Fly, and collab remix for Get Flavor. Think I am going to be playing a Happy Endings party with some of the Young Gunz guys in January, and plans to hit Europe in the New Year for Spring.
AO-AO: Thanks so much for doing this mixtape, how would you describe it?
I really enjoyed doing the mix. It’s basically what you would hear me play in my sets. Some Future, UK, Techno, and Hip Hop depending on my mood. Thanks AO-AO. Enjoy
